France to begin stopping migrant vessels in English Channel following UK pressure
France has agreed to begin stopping small boats in the English Channel, after an extended period of pressure from the UK.
The change in policy follows the British leader sent a letter to the French leader asking him to back the initiative and saying there presently "lack any effective preventive measure" in the Channel.
French security forces have been authorized to intercept the small boats at sea, but exclusively prior to they've picked up their migrants, according to authoritative confirmation.
French authorities have infrequently intervened to prevent the heavily loaded boats leaving the coastline because it is viewed as too great a risk to both officers and individuals.
"It is crucial that we deploy these tactics this month... We have no effective prevention in the Channel."
Currently, a French maritime police spokesperson says personnel will start intervening at sea, with the objective of safeguarding human life.
Notably, the official ruled out the use of nets to stop boats, which had earlier been reported as a potential technique to snarl the engines of the boats.
This determination to intervene at all is a major advancement, following a brief change towards a stricter strategy this warmer season, which ceased when the former Interior Minister departed from office.
This was demonstrated in July, in the run-up to a meeting between the Prime Minister and French president, when authorities were witnessed walking into the sea to damage the hulls of a boat.
Currently French officials will again be permitted to stop boats before they pick up migrant individuals from the beaches of France's north coast, however it's not clear how the small boats will be prevented.
Strong winds are presently postponing the commencement of intervention operations and the human trafficking networks will be seeking methods to adapt to avoid interception, as they have frequently done in the past.
The Home Office and Downing Street have been approached for comment.
