Wimbledon Embraces Video Replay System in 2025.

The Championships court with video review system

The tournament joins the American and Aussie Opens in implementing video review technology.

Replay systems will be launched at Wimbledon this year.

Athletes will gain the option to challenge specific calls from the chair umpire, echoing the practice already in use at each of the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

This innovation will be accessible on the main stadium and Court One throughout the Championships and on the remaining featured courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This move arrives only a season following the AELTC implemented ELC, which terminated the centuries-old tradition of line judges.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Competitors cannot to challenge the call of the electronic line calling, but they can ask for the umpire to re-examine specific decisions, such as:

  • If a ball has bounced twice.
  • If a shot touched an opponent's racquet or person on the way past.
  • Possible interference end of a point.

Notably, there is no limit on the amount of challenges a player can request.

Practical Application

An illustrative case occurred in a recent tournament recently, where a top player used the review system against Jack Draper.

The British player admitted it was a difficult situation for the umpire, but thought his rival had "played the rules quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a replay and determined the player was guilty of interference, awarding the point to Medvedev.

Broader Adoption

This technology are not new for Grand Slams. It was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open this year.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the ATP circuit will have the system in place at every one of its events.

Further Updates

Another change at The Championships 2025 will be the introduction of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the audio calls from the ELC system.

This solves instances where the crowd have occasionally been uncertain whether a ball was in or out.

In other news, with precisely 100 days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, the AELTC have further revealed an increase in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
